These units are excellent at powering appliances through a cord, and structurally unable to back up a house through a panel without added equipment.

One stores a fixed amount of energy and delivers it silently; the other makes energy continuously as long as fuel arrives. The distinction drives every trade-off.

Separating the circuits that matter into their own panel usually costs less, sizes the generator smaller, and makes outage operation far simpler.

The engine is the easy part; the sensing, timers, start battery and control logic in the transfer switch are what actually fail between outages.

Engine output falls with air density, so a machine rated at sea level delivers noticeably less at elevation and may need a jetting change to run properly.

Dual-fuel machines publish a lower output on propane because the fuel carries less energy per unit of air-fuel mixture, and that trade buys storage life.

Paralleling combines continuous output but usually keeps the 120-volt limitation, needs matched units, and does not give you a 240-volt supply.

Adapters that split a 240-volt outlet into 120-volt receptacles do not make the full rating available to one leg, and many are unlisted and unprotected.

A 240-volt generator has two 120-volt legs, each with its own limit, so piling everything onto one of them overloads the machine at half its rated output.

Gasoline degrades chemically in months, and the residue it leaves in a carburetor is the single most common reason a standby portable will not start.
