A Battery Has Voltage but Cannot Run the Device? Look at Internal Resistance

A battery can show a plausible voltage with no load and collapse when the device starts. That is why an open-circuit voltage reading cannot prove useful power capability. Internal resistance, contact resistance, state of charge, temperature, and the required current all affect what happens once the battery has a job to do.

A voltmeter asks very little of the battery

A typical voltage measurement draws much less current than a motor, radio transmitter, or bright light. The battery can therefore maintain a reasonable reading while being unable to support the intended load. This does not make the meter dishonest; it means the test answered a limited question. Open-circuit voltage can provide information when interpreted for the chemistry and conditions, but it is not a complete capacity or high-current performance test.

The simplest model adds an internal resistance

In a basic teaching model, terminal voltage under load equals the source voltage minus current times internal resistance. A hypothetical 12V source with 0.5 ohm internal resistance would lose 2V while supplying 4A, leaving 10V at its terminals. A 0.05 ohm source at the same current would lose only 0.2V. Real batteries are more complex and dynamic, but the model explains why two similar no-load readings can lead to very different device behavior.

Contacts can imitate a weak battery

The complete path includes battery holders, connectors, switches, and wiring. Resistance outside the cells can also cause voltage drop and heating. Corrosion, loose contacts, or an unsuitable connector can therefore produce symptoms that resemble battery aging. Inspect only as directed by the product instructions, and do not short a battery to test its strength. A deliberate short circuit is not a useful consumer diagnostic; it can release dangerous current and damage the battery or equipment.

A proper load test has a defined purpose

Manufacturers may specify a battery test, service diagnostic, or approved tester for the product. Such tests need appropriate current, duration, temperature, and acceptance criteria. A random resistor connected to an unknown battery is not a universal alternative. For a removable consumer battery, substitution with the specified type may be a safer troubleshooting step when the device manual permits it. Rechargeable packs with protection and communication electronics need their own procedures.

Separate capacity from power capability

A battery might deliver a modest current for a useful period but fail at a demanding startup. Another might support a short peak yet have little total energy left. These are different performance questions. Record whether the symptom is immediate shutdown, reduced runtime, or a failure only during a high-load event. That information helps choose the right diagnostic. It also prevents replacing a battery when the real issue is a damaged holder or a device drawing abnormal current.

  • Inspect accessible contacts according to the device instructions.
