For compatible plug-in loads, a suitably rated energy meter can provide a more direct appliance measurement over a useful period. Hardwired equipment may require qualified monitoring or existing manufacturer data. Avoid turning off critical loads simply to create a visible step in the utility graph. Share energy data only through services you understand, since detailed usage can reveal patterns of household activity.
