Copper-clad aluminum cable contains an aluminum core with a copper outer layer. It is not electrically or mechanically identical to solid copper of the same dimensions. Whether it is suitable depends on the cable application, certification, resistance, terminations, and power requirements rather than the copper-colored surface alone.

The conductor is a composite material

The copper layer and aluminum core contribute differently to the conductor behavior. Aluminum has higher electrical resistivity than copper, so replacing a solid-copper conductor with the same-sized copper-clad aluminum construction generally changes resistance. The exact result depends on dimensions and material proportions. A copper-colored cut surface or jacket claim does not provide all those details. Use manufacturer specifications and credible product identification. Do not assume that every cable described as copper contains a solid-copper conductor throughout.

DC resistance matters when cables also deliver power

Power over Ethernet and other low-voltage power applications make conductor resistance particularly relevant. For the same current, a higher loop resistance produces more voltage drop and I-squared-R heating. A data link coming up does not establish full compliance

A network port showing a link only demonstrates that the equipment established communication under the present conditions. Equally, suitability in one category does not establish compliance for a different communications or power-cable application. UL guidance describes conductor-material markings and category-specific identification. Check the actual product certification and intended use rather than relying on a logo in a marketplace photo. The installer should verify the applicable requirements for the exact cable system and installation.

Terminations and long-term conditions also matter

The approved connector or terminal must be suitable for the conductor construction, size, and application. Mechanical handling and the cable manufacturer bend and pull requirements remain relevant. Do not substitute cable solely because the outside diameter and connector look familiar. For an existing questionable installation, preserve the product label and documentation and arrange appropriate inspection or certification testing. If power delivery is involved, include the actual equipment and operating conditions in the assessment instead of judging the cable by data connectivity alone.
